Lots to talk about this month….
June provides us with many causes to reflect…
We celebrate PRIDE, Indigenous History Month as well as the #BuddyUp campaign for men’s suicide prevention.
Recent events such as the horrific discovery of 215 Indigenous Children at Kamloops Residential School and the tragic assasination of the Afzal Salman family in Ontario give rise to strong emotions- anger, shame, fear, hopelessness- all added to the overarching anxiety of an ongoing pandemic and associated restrictions.
Now, more than ever, we need to collectively consider the impacts of recent events on our overall mental health and well-being. Acknowledge it, name it, talk about it and ramp up your self care. And, know that we are here for you when you need us. Often, one single session can provide you with the perspective and support needed to move forward through the darkness.
For us at Momentum, we acknowledge we are on traditional Treaty 6 and Métis Region 4 lands, home of the Cree, Saulteaux (So-toe), Blackfoot, Métis, Dene (De-nay) and Nakota Sioux (Sue). As an organization, we are committed to ensure cultural safety in our counselling programs. This month, let’s challenge ourselves to learn more about our contentious history. Let’s find ways to educate ourselves and our children and advocate for change. One amazing organization to visit for resources is the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society: https://fncaringsociety.com/
We are also working to ensure we create safe spaces for the LGBTQ2S+ community. Our Queer Cafe workshop brings folks together to share their experiences and create a sense of community. We have recently added pronouns to our group display names to increase inclusivity. We are committed to continuously evaluate our policies, processes and programs through this lens and appreciate our client’s feedback!
